Im not sure where my fiancée first saw this, but she told me it was really good and she wanted it on DVD, so i bought it for her for christmas when i saw it in the supermarket. Of course she put it on upon opening it, i instantly regretted buying it and wished id just let her carry on wanting it etc. I decided to sit online whilst she watched it instead of watching it with her, but found myself watching it after the first 15 minutes or so. Its actually quite good for what it is. Take it at face value and you are looking at a Musical for youngsters, about young people, in young people situations. Its not meant for people over high school age, and since im well past high school no one i know meets that criteria and thus most are disapproving of it.
The songs are fun and energetic, the entire plot is cliche but kids wont watch the older films with the exact same messages in them, so this is the only way of getting it through to them. Its a proper "summer of fun" film about friendship and relationships surviving after school has ended, and even though we've all already done that, we forget some people havnt and this film shows the difficulties in that which they can feel a connection with.
The actors and actresses in it are amazing dancers and your usual American singers (ie their voices are manufactured pop so flawless)and also they are quite good at the acting part really, which is unsurprising since Disney have the money to make sure their staff fit their Aryan ideologies in the looks department whilst having the ability to perform. These are all points you cant take away from them, what do you look for in a musical?! Good songs, good voices, attractive people, great dancing, some form of engaging plot, humor. This film checks all the boxes, and that is obviously going to be what it does because some jobs worth has sat and made sure it does, but thats what the aim of the game is, maximizing popularity, and its no wonder this series has taken the younger generation by storm.
If you are a musical lover, and dont particularly dislike Americans, then i think you might find yourself enjoying this film. Its quite a fun film and it retains some of the innocence that most other musicals for younger folk dont have. Id prefer to show this to my kids than Greece, which is way over rated, and i think they would learn more from it.
The only down side to this series is they are going to drain it of life until it is rotten and no more cash can be made from it. But until that starts to happen, lighten up a bit and enjoy the ride.

8/10
