Hairspray review

Posted : 7 months, 2 weeks ago on 16 April 2008 08:59 (A review of Hairspray)

I must say, having a partner who absolutely loves musicals kind of warps your opinion of them in time. I remember seeing the old version of Hairspray when i was younger just because it was on late at night and i was "staying up" which was a treat. Any other time in life i can safely say iv never subjected myself to the musical variety of film except for the biggies like Greece.
That in mind i wasn't exactly looking to watch this film when i did! My vision of the evening was a quiet night on the computer with a few drinks n the occasional word to the other half, instead she put this on and i wasn't really sure what to expect! I liked the first song, the leads voice is incredibly strong and powerful, i decided it might not be a bad film after all, and that was it! The rest of the story went by in no time, i enjoyed the music, the plot was great, and held important messages about the world, i loved how well they did at making it look like and feel like the 60's etc and how the whole film just seemed spot on. (Note im not old enough to know the 60's but it seemed like how other old films portray it)
Im sure most musical lovers will have bought this film in triplicate by now but any one else who hasn't seen it should give it a shot, even John Travolta almost acts in this film! Its the only time in his entire career iv not hated him for filling a roll. Zac Efron was brilliant in his roll and i feel that although he belongs to the evil Disney corporation etc, and he seems incredibly plastic, he does seem to posses an enormous amount of talent i could never equal and for that i respect him.
This is a great film with well chosen actors, each roll is played perfectly and it is filled with talent from the start. It even almost convinced me to watch more musicals!!

Chinese Fantasy Epic, entertaining and e

Posted : 7 months, 3 weeks ago on 8 April 2008 01:27 (A review of The Storm Riders)

I spent ages trying to find a copy of this film on the internet and when i finally got it through i opted to watch the English dubbed American edit. I was absolutely appalled and gutted that i had wasted time and money on such an odd film and felt i had got my hopes raised and dashed.
It wasn't until a few weeks later whilst bored that i was tidying up and i noticed that i had the 2 disc version which also included the "Directors Cut" i looked at it and could not work out why this version was so much longer. I put it on and watched it, slowly getting to grips with the subtitles as it is all in Cantonese.
In the edit, i found most of the characters irritating and cliche. Their voices were absolutely stupid and annoying, and it was of very poor quality. Scenes were poorly stuck together and at some points continuity was hugely neglected!!!
In the directors cut however, all voices were done brilliantly, the Jester had a regular voice instead of the hugely flamboyant voice he was given in the American one, and people actually sounded the way there characters were portrayed. The story flowed coherently and every thing that happened made perfect sense.
I finished this film happy that i had found out about it, there is a scene in it that i will always hate, a love scene where children sing in the background, it is cringe worthy, but if you mute it till that has finished it is ok. The character Charity is the worst feature but she is necessary to the plot. All the other characters except perhaps "Mud Buddha" are great IMO but at least he makes me laugh.
I recommend this to people who like fantasy really, its not the greatest film and you might find it a bit cringing but i like it because it seems to have had a lot of effort go into making it etc. There are some good scenes and it is a fantasy film so you have to expel a lot of disbelief. Its probably going to appeal more to younger audiences, i was about 16-17 when i bought this i believe.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children review

Posted : 8 months ago on 31 March 2008 06:56 (A review of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children)

FF:AC's popularity relies heavily on the success of Final Fantasy 7 as everyone with half a brain knew it would, i dont mean to be stating the obvious but it is the only way i could think of beginning this review. Whilst watching it i did enjoy the premise, the story was moderately interesting but i felt that when writing it they must have thought to themselves

"We dont need to write gold, we're writing a sequel to the greatest game on earth, everyone will buy it, then when they dont like it, it'll be to late as we'll have their money!!"

Maybe i am oversimplifying that but with all the effort that went into making it look good, the fight scenes, the graphics etc the adverts for this would look promising even if the story was about Clouds visit to the doctors.
That doesn't really mean its an awful film or anything, i like the fact you get to see something new from the FF7 universe, i like that the characters were superbly updated and wonderfully made. The fact Sephiroth also came back made me cringe a bit as i mean, what are the odds?! Really? But if a new bad guy had been created it would not have lived up to him at all.

Overall part of me is glad they finally made a sequel, im glad we had the technology available to make it look good, and the idea was alright. Most of me though wishes we never got such a B movie plot, the story was written for "straight to DVD" averageness when the game deserves an "EPIC BLOCKBUSTER" sequel. I enjoyed watching it as it is entertaining the first time, but its not something i will watch repeatedly, if i watch this half as many times as iv played FF7 it will only be because someone else has put it on, or im stuck on a desert island with a limited supply of entertainment.
Watch it to complete the story, but don't expect much from it, then you will be happy.

Not at all what i expected.

Posted : 8 months, 3 weeks ago on 11 March 2008 07:27 (A review of Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen)

I was absolutely appalled when i rented this film only to discover it was nothing like its predecessors "Confessions of a window cleaner" "Confessions of a Rock star" "Adventures of a plumbers mate" and "the ups and downs of a handyman"
This film seemed to have the most appetizing title, yet offered almost NOTHING to write home about. I found my self left completely wanting after watching this film, i was not at all satisfied by its outcome.

I do not recommend this to any man looking for a quiet evening in. Stick to the others in the series.

Wasted Chance at Greatness.

Posted : 8 months, 3 weeks ago on 9 March 2008 10:31 (A review of Johnny English)

Rowan Atkinson completely threw his chance at greatness down the pan with this film. In the past he provided us the Joy of Black Adder, and the slap stick Mr Bean who provides nothing more than he promises in just pure silliness. Jonny English though tried to promise pure comedy unlike the 2 above, tried to combine spy action and comedy in a silly way but wound up being predictable and pointless. The plot was weak and the jokes were baron of wit. I remember watching this at the cinema in extreme discomfort as my face cringed so far inwards i was devouring myself. I wouldn't recommend this film to anybody really, if you want comedy and it HAS to be Atkinson then watch Black Adder, if you love Black Adder already and respect Rowan Atkinson, dont watch this. You'll wish you had listened if ya do!

Classic childrens film.

Posted : 8 months, 3 weeks ago on 9 March 2008 10:20 (A review of The Land Before Time)

This film was one of my childhood favorites, a film about a group of child Dinosaurs separated from their parents and forced to get along despite their racial/species' differences. It has some classic scenes and brilliant moments, one or two scenes still bring a tear to my eye to this very day. There is a lot of fantasy in this film but also a lot of values and lessons to be learned from that all children should appreciate. If you never saw this film growing up, i think you could still watch it and see what i mean when i say classic, its much like American Tale in that all children should watch it because it was made with real class. Sadly it has been milked with over 12 sequels since, but this one is the one you need to watch.

Should never of been cancelled!

Posted : 8 months, 4 weeks ago on 8 March 2008 08:23 (A review of Futurama: Bender's Big Score)

As if any proof was ever needed that Fox were insane for canceling Futurama this was it. Benders Big Score is a brilliant Film/Long Episode that basically covers everything that the show was about. Time travel is used to an extreme degree which feels like it might get confusing at first but then doesn't really as the story progresses. Its great seeing everything tie in and all the throw backs to old episodes being mentioned throughout. The comedy is A grade stuff and makes up for the time spent without it on the air. There are more films coming out i believe and so this was a great way to get the ball rolling again, i think Futurama gained popularity with age, and people didnt really realize what it was until it was gone, now we have a second chance to appreciate it fully and if this is a hint of things to come i hope it is around for a LONG time!!

Boyhood defined.

Posted : 8 months, 4 weeks ago on 8 March 2008 08:19 (A review of Stand by Me)

This film is basically every young boys childhood summers, rounded up into one big heap and then cast aside and replaced with the definitive summer adventure that can not be beaten. Stand by Me is an amazing journey, about the coming of age of 4 young boys who venture out to try and find a dead body they have heard someone found in the woods near their homes. It is a long journey which takes them some time to complete and along the way you basically gain insight into each of the boys personalities and characters, which are all well acted for children! All people coming of age should view this film as a right of passage, and i feel most would appreciate being given the chance as it is another brilliant piece of film history that must not be missed! Once you watch this film you will feel like childhood is the best part of your life, but that having it as memories is far better than actually being there. All those adventures you had as a kid are gone yet your life has barely even begun .

A timeless classic!

Posted : 8 months, 4 weeks ago on 8 March 2008 08:09 (A review of Groundhog Day)

Groundhog day is just one of those films that writers today can never emulate, try as they might. It has the spark of magic that all films used to have, but which has been killed in modern creations. Everyone knows the story, wether it be from X files, the Simpsons, or what ever other story has parodied it, this is the ultimate tale of living the same day over and over again. Bill Murray is a fantastic actor and thus obviously provides the film with the sparks it possesses, but everything he does in this film just makes you feel like you are witnessing an era that is dead. This film is something that everyone should watch at least once in their life, and then buy and re watch, everyone has thought at one point about what they would do given the chance to relive the same day over and over, and this film covers everything.
Watch it now! If you haven't already you are missing out on a proper film here.
